How it works
How to use this Bluesky username generator
A Bluesky handle generator gives you username ideas based on what your account is about. Go from a few words about you to a handle you’ll keep in three steps, under a minute, no login required.
Describe your account
Add a few words about who you are and what you’ll post. “Indie game dev sharing devlogs” or “neighborhood coffee shop” works well.
Generate ideas
Click “Generate usernames” for a list of suggestions. Each one follows Bluesky’s handle rules and comes with the .bsky.social ending. Not feeling it? Tweak your description and try again.
Claim it on Bluesky
Copy your favorite with one click. In the Bluesky app, go to Settings, then Account, then Handle, and paste it in. Bluesky tells you right away if a handle is taken.
Know your names
Bluesky handle, display name, or custom domain?
Bluesky gives you two names, plus a third option if you own a website. Here’s what each one does.
@ Handle
Your unique @name, like @brightbrew.bsky.social. It’s how people mention and find you, and it’s part of your profile link.
🏷️ Display name
The bold name at the top of your profile. It can include spaces, capitals, and emojis, like “Bright Brew Coffee”, and it doesn’t need to be unique.
🌐 Custom domain
A website you own, used as your handle, like @brightbrew.com. It drops the .bsky.social ending and shows people the account is really yours.
The rules
Bluesky handle rules
Every suggestion from this generator already follows these rules. If you’re writing your own, here’s what Bluesky accepts.
Rules for a .bsky.social handle
3 to 18 characters. That’s the part before .bsky.social.
Letters, numbers, and hyphens only. No spaces, underscores, periods, or emojis.
No hyphen at the start or end.bright-brew works, -brightbrew doesn’t.
Not case-sensitive. Bluesky shows every handle in lowercase.
Unique across Bluesky. Each handle belongs to one account, so popular names go fast.
Using your own domain instead? Custom domain handles follow domain name rules, so they can be longer.

How to change your Bluesky handle
Changing your handle is free, and you keep your followers, posts, and likes.
Open Settings
In the Bluesky app or on the web, open the menu and go to Settings.
Go to Account, then Handle
Tap Account, then Handle. You’ll see your current handle and the option to change it.
Save your new handle
Type your new handle and save it. Then update it anywhere you’ve shared it, like your website, email signature, and other bios.
🔗 Using your own domain
In the same Handle screen, choose “I have my own domain”. Bluesky gives you a DNS record to add with your domain provider, or a file to upload to your site. Once it verifies, your website address becomes your handle.
⚠️ Seeing “Invalid handle”?
Bluesky shows this when it can’t verify a custom domain handle, usually because the DNS record was removed or the domain expired. Add the record back, or switch to a .bsky.social handle, and the warning goes away.
Heads up: your old handle is released when you change it, so anyone can claim it.

What makes a great one
Tips for a Bluesky handle people remember
If your favorite hits all four of these, you’re onto a winner.
✂
Keep it short
You get 18 characters, but shorter handles are easier to type, mention, and remember.
➖
Go easy on hyphens
One hyphen can make a handle easier to read. Three makes it hard to say out loud.
🎯
Say what you do
A niche word like “bakes” or “devlog” tells people what to expect before they tap. Pick one that still fits as your content grows.
Got your handle? Now give people a reason to follow.
A great handle is step one. Hopper HQ’s Bluesky scheduler lets you plan posts ahead alongside Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, and more, so your new profile never goes quiet.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is the Bluesky Handle Generator free?
Yes. You can generate as many handle ideas as you like, without signing up.
What is a Bluesky handle?
Your handle is your unique username on Bluesky, like @yourname.bsky.social. People use it to mention you, and it’s part of your profile link.
How long can a Bluesky handle be?
The part before .bsky.social can be 3 to 18 characters, using letters, numbers, and hyphens. Custom domain handles follow domain name rules instead, so they can be longer.
Does the generator check if a Bluesky handle is available?
No. Every suggestion follows Bluesky’s handle rules, but availability shows as “Unknown”. Bluesky tells you right away if a handle is taken when you try to save it.
Can I change my Bluesky handle?
Yes, anytime and for free. Go to Settings, then Account, then Handle. You keep your followers and posts, but your old handle is released for anyone to claim.
Can I use my own domain as my Bluesky handle?
Yes. Choose “I have my own domain” in your Handle settings, add the DNS record Bluesky gives you, and verify it. Your handle then becomes your website address, like @yourbrand.com.
Should my Bluesky handle match my X or Instagram handle?
If you can, yes. Using the same name everywhere makes you easier to find, especially for followers moving over from X. Bluesky handles can’t use underscores, so swap them for hyphens or drop them.
What should I type in for the best handle ideas?
The more specific, the better. Include what you post, who it’s for, and any location or vibe. “Coffee shop” gets you generic ideas. “Specialty coffee roaster with a taproom in Seattle” gets you handles you’d actually keep.
