Type any X handle and get an instant verdict: available, taken, or invalid. No opening X, no guessing, no sign-up. Check as many handles as you like, free.
Don’t settle for @yourname_real_2. X caps handles at 15 characters and only allows letters, numbers and underscores — so keep it tight and readable. One of these usually frees up a clean version.
Need a fresh angle entirely? Try the X Name Generator — handles tailored to your niche.
Short handles
Looking for a short X handle?
Short handles — the four and five-letter kind — were mostly claimed in X’s early years, so an open one takes patience to find. Run plenty of combinations through the checker to spot the rare ones still valid, or use our X Name Generator to spin up short, brandable options as you go. Because X allows only letters, numbers and underscores (no periods or hyphens), a single underscore or one extra letter is usually the cleanest way to free up a version that still reads well.
X has hundreds of millions of active users — the good handles get squatted on fast. A two-second check now beats a rebrand later.

Lock in your identity
Your @handle rides along in every reply, mention and quote-tweet. Claim it before someone else does — even if you’re not posting yet.
⚠️
Avoid brand collisions
A handle too close to another account sends mentions, tags and search to the wrong profile — and invites impersonation. A free check rules that out.

Stay consistent across platforms
The same handle on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube makes you discoverable everywhere. Check X here, then mirror the rest.

Beat the squatters
X only occasionally releases inactive handles, and there’s no queue to claim them. Knowing a name is gone saves you waiting on one that may never open up.
How to choose
What a great X username actually looks like
Skim this before you commit. If your candidate hits all five, run it through the checker above — you’re probably onto a winner.
Five-point handle check
15 characters or fewer. That’s X’s hard cap — and shorter handles are easier to tag, remember and fit inside a reply.
Easy to say out loud. If a friend can’t repeat it after hearing it once, neither can a podcast host.
One spelling, not three. No ph for f, no rogue numbers — those lookalikes end up with your mentions.
On-brand. It sounds like the thing you actually do. @maya_writes > @maya84720.
Letters, numbers, underscores only. X doesn’t allow periods, spaces or hyphens, so pick a handle that reads cleanly within those rules.
Stuck? The X Name Generator spits out handles built around your niche — every result is pre-checkable here.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is the X Name Checker free?
Yes. The X Name Checker is 100% free and requires no login or sign-up. Type a handle, hit check, and see whether it’s available on X in seconds.
Do I need an X (Twitter) account to use the checker?
No. The checker doesn’t connect to your X account and we don’t store the handles you search. It works from any modern browser without you needing to log in.
How does the X Name Checker work?
Type the handle you want into the search box. We first validate it against X’s rules (4 to 15 characters, letters, numbers and underscores only), then query X’s live data to see whether an account already exists at that handle — you get an available, taken, or invalid verdict in seconds. If X can’t be reached for any reason, we hand you a one-tap link to open the handle on X and check it yourself. Handle taken? Try variations or jump to our X Name Generator for ideas.
How accurate is the X handle checker?
It queries X’s live data to see whether an account exists at the handle, so the available or taken verdict reflects what you’d see if you tried to claim it right now. X login-walls unauthenticated lookups more aggressively than most networks, so on the rare occasion it can’t return a clear signal, we drop back to a one-tap “check it on X yourself” link rather than guess — so you never get a wrong answer. The only other time it can lag is if a handle is claimed in the seconds after you check.
What are X’s username rules?
X handles are 4 to 15 characters and can contain letters, numbers and underscores only — no periods, spaces or hyphens. They’re case-insensitive, and X reserves handles that contain the words “twitter” or “admin”.
Can I change my X handle later if I pick a different one now?
Yes. X lets you change your handle any time from Settings → Your account → Account information → Username. Bear in mind that older @mentions, links and embeds will still point at your old handle, so changing later isn’t entirely cost-free.
Can I check handles across multiple platforms?
This tool focuses on X. For cross-platform checks, use our dedicated Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and Pinterest name checkers. To keep a brand consistent across every account, a full social media tool like Hopper HQ covers it.
What’s the difference between my X handle and my display name?
Your handle is the unique @username in your profile URL — it’s what this checker validates. Your display name is the larger name shown above it, can be up to 50 characters, doesn’t have to be unique, and can be changed freely without affecting your @.
How do I get a short X handle, like a four or five-letter one?
Most short handles were claimed in X’s early years, so the trick is checking lots of combinations quickly. Try adding a niche word, your location, or an underscore, and run each option through the checker to spot the rare short handles still open. Our X Name Generator is a fast way to brainstorm them.
Does the checker work for business and brand accounts?
Yes. Handle rules are identical whether you plan to run a personal, creator or business profile, so you can validate any handle here before you set up or rebrand a business account on X.
It’s called X now — do Twitter handles still work the same?
Yes. The rebrand from Twitter to X didn’t change how handles work: the same 4–15 character rules apply, existing @handles carry over, and twitter.com links redirect to x.com. This checker works for X and Twitter interchangeably.
